About:
D.D. Roach (Darryl Deryck Roach)

Hi everyone. Thanks for visiting my website and I do hope you enjoy browsing. Here is a little bit about me.
I grew up in Diego Martin, Trinidad and Tobago, a kid who loved to read. I guess its why my glasses are so thick now. I used to read in the dark after my parents turned off the lights.  I spent countless hours buried in The Famous Five, The Secret Seven, The Hardy Boys, and even our old household encyclopedia. I even started reading biographies around age 12. Something about reading someone's story always interests me. My favorites were books on adventure and I must mention Greek Mythology. Loved those. I loved stories about adventure, friendship, and mystery, and always dreamed of writing one of my own. At fourteen, I even wrote a short book, long lost now.
Years later, that same dream came back to life through Adventure Seekers: The Secret Hideaway, a story born from nostalgia and shaped by my childhood memories of camping with the Fatima Sea Scouts and visiting the various islands around Trinidad shores with my family during the vacation periods. It became a Caribbean adventure filled with courage, loyalty, and family, and of course, fun adventure
My writing style is instinctive and visual. I start with the characters, their voices, their habits, their energy, and let them shape the story. When a thought enters my head, I just type until its out. I may be shaping the storyline and even changing it while I do this. But I just have to get the thought out. I also love writing dialogue that feels real, scenes that play out like a movie, and moments that make readers feel like they’re right there beside the characters. My goal is simple: to help kids rediscover the joy of getting lost in a good book, that same feeling I had staying up late, flipping pages under the covers.
As an amateur graphic designer and visual storyteller, I also bring my worlds to life through imagery. I design my own covers and illustrations, using art and technology to capture the heart of each chapter and pull readers deeper into the story.
Writing, for me, is equal parts passion and patience. The hardest part isn’t starting, it’s refining and editing. But when someone tells me they couldn’t put the book down, that’s the moment it all becomes worth it. And if they told me the book made them cry like (A Dog’s View) I feel proud. Not the trying part but knowing I was able to bring forth such emotions through my words.
With A Dog’s View – The World Through a Dog’s Eyes and the growing Adventure Seekers series, I’m building a collection of heartfelt, imaginative stories that remind readers, young and old, what it feels like to day dream again, away from the modern devices.
My mission is simple:
To write stories that kids love, remember, and lose themselves in.

Q&A with Author D.D. Roach

Q: Where did your love for storytelling begin?
A: I grew up in Diego Martin, Trinidad and Tobago, surrounded by books. My favorites were The Famous Five, The Secret Seven, and The Hardy Boys. I’d read for hours, even the encyclopedia when I ran out of stories! I loved the sense of mystery and discovery in those books, and I always dreamt of writing something that could give other kids that same feeling of wonder.
Q: What inspired you to finally start writing your first novel?
A: I always wanted to write a story about kids surviving on an island. That idea never left me. One day I just sat down and started typing. The story evolved as I wrote, it changed completely from my first idea, but I knew I had something special. That became The Adventure Seekers: The Secret Hideaway.
Q: Why did you choose to set your story in Trinidad and the nearby islands?
A: The islands are part of who I am. As a child, my grandfather owned a boat, and our family spent a lot of time on and around the water. Those memories shaped my imagination — the sea, the small islands, the freedom of adventure. Writing about it felt natural, like coming home.
Q: How would you describe your writing style?
A: I write by instinct. I start with a main character or group and let the story unfold naturally. I love creating dialogue and character banter, it makes the story feel alive. I like my scenes to move quickly, but I also want readers to feel like they’re there, in the moment, part of the adventure.
Q: Do your books share any common themes?
A: Definitely. Whether it’s The Adventure Seekers or A Dog’s View, the themes of loyalty, courage, and family always come through. Even when the stories are different — one about survival and the other about a dog’s journey — they both celebrate love, connection, and resilience.
Q: What’s the hardest part of being an author?
A: Editing! I can write a full draft in a couple of weeks, but editing takes months. I go through each book at least ten times, making changes and improvements. My parents help me proofread since I don’t have a professional editor. It’s a long process, but I want every book to be the best it can be.
Q: And what’s the most rewarding part?

A: Hearing that someone read and enjoyed my book. When someone tells me they couldn’t put it down or that it reminded them of their childhood, that’s the best feeling in the world. It reminds me why I do this.
Q: You’re also a graphic designer. Does that influence your writing?
A: Absolutely. I design and edit all my book covers and images. I often visualize scenes while I write — like movie stills — and that helps me describe them better. I want the artwork to reflect the story and make readers curious to open the book.
Q: What can readers expect next from you?
A: I’m working on The Adventure Seekers Part Two, which brings in new characters and even more action. It’s a continuation of the first story, and I’m really excited about it. I plan to write several books in the series — I want it to feel like the Famous Five for a new generation.
Q: What’s your ultimate goal as an author?
A: To create stories that kids love and remember — books that make them daydream, imagine, and feel part of the adventure. I want them to experience that same excitement I felt as a child reading under the covers at night. If my stories can do that, I’ve succeeded.
